Evacuation orders issued due to chemical spill in San Jacinto

Authorities are working to contain a hazardous materials situation in San Jacinto after pool chemicals spilled from a shipping container.

According to the Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department, the chemical began spreading shortly before 2:15 a.m. in the 800 block of Shaver Street.

Firefighters reported a “strong chemical odor in the area” before locating “pool chemicals leaking from a large shipping container”.

Hazardous materials crews were called to the scene to assist.

Cal Fire crews arrived at the container with the hazardous chemicals but did not completely contain it.

Evacuation orders are still in place for residents who have been evacuated.

Around 8 a.m., authorities issued an evacuation order for homes east of Hewitt Street, south of 7th Avenue, north of Shaver Street and west of Camino Los Banos in due to the chemical spill.

A total of 272 homes and a total of 951 people were evacuated.

2,160 homes remain in the alert zone.
