Shin-Etsu Chemical Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Tokyo; President: Yasuhiko Saitoh) announced that it will expand its mass production system which aims at the diffusion of gallium nitride (GaN) bonded substrates and epitaxial film products.
In 2019, Shin-Etsu Chemical entered into a licensing agreement with Qromis, Inc. (Headquarters: Santa Clara, CA; CEO Cem Basceri) regarding the innovative patented Qromis Substrate Technology (QSTMT) in the field of substrate material which makes epitaxial growth of GaN film possible with the advantages of high-quality, stress-free GaN with very little strain. QST substrates are optimally designed for the CMOS process and using their superior characteristics, it is possible to use them for applications in devices such as power supplies that require a withstand voltage greater than 1800 V, RF devices for 5G and beyond, and special LEDs for Micro-LED displays.
Shin-Etsu Chemical has established a supply system for QST 6″ and 8″ substrates enhanced with our proprietary technology. Together with Qromis, Inc., Shin-Etsu Chemical will continue to invest in doubling its production system to meet the recent rapid expansion in demand, while continuing to manufacture other high-quality products.
In addition, Shin-Etu Handotai Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Tokyo, Chairman Fumio Akiya), our subsidiary that manufactures semiconductor silicon wafers, entered into a license agreement with Sanken Electric Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Niiza, Saitama Prefecture, Japan; Chairman Hiroshi Takahashi) regarding this company’s expertise in GaN epitaxial growth technology. Under this contract, Shin-Etsu Handotai will be able to manufacture and sell GaN epitaxial film products for applications such as power supply devices, high frequency RF devices and LED devices, both at Japan and around the world.
The GaN market is expected to grow at a rapid pace in the future as these devices will enable significant reductions in global power usage and consumption and deliver the high performance requirements essential for mobility advancements in areas such as electric vehicles, autonomous driving, 5G and beyond. 5G communication and further digitization.
By providing large-diameter GaN-related products, including 300mm-diameter products in the future, Shin-Etsu Group will contribute to the realization of a sustainable and energy-efficient society.
